Charm ☼ 006 [accidental video]

[Lily is curled up on her bed crying, the SFC on her vanity broadcasting from where she threw it after checking the list and seeing that James is gone.]

This isn't fair.

[She's kind of a mess. Oh dear.]

[The SFC makes a noise, like she's got a message and she sits up, quickly wiping the tears from her eyes. Nope, no message, but...it's on. Oh bugger it all, it's broadcasting. This is embarrassing and probably the worst possible moment. Note to self, Lily. Don't throw the SFC.]

[She clears her throat, desperately wiping her tears away and trying to smile.]

James is gone.

[And with that, a tear slips down her cheek. There's no point in continuing this, she's not going to be able to say much more, so she just shrugs helplessly and hangs up.]

He was bad at this sort of thing and he knew it, clearing his throat some.

"Hey look, we'll just keep ourselves busy until he gets back, okay? There's plenty of things to do...er...shopping or something..."

Okay, he was trying at least.

She shrugged. "I suppose I should do something other than lay around in bed the entire time he's gone. James did that when Sirius died and it was dreadful. I felt like I'd lost him too. I promised myself I wouldn't fall apart like that."

She dabbed at her eyes with a handkerchief. "I've not been very successful thus far."

"Then don't fall apart like this." He said matter of factly. It was the best he could offer, or at least as honest as he could be.

"You're strong, you can wait it out until he gets back." He added, shifting his weight a little.

Her eyes widened a little, a little surprised by Ron. But he was right. She nodded and blew her nose one more time before steeling her jaw. Yes. She could get through this. No problem. She sighed heavily.

"Thank you, Ron. You're right. I suppose the worst part is feeling so helpless. There's nothing I can do."

She opened the door all the way and stepped back so he could come in if he wanted.

"But there really is a possibility that he won't come back. And I'll have to deal with that. I can't sit around waiting for forever."

Another sigh as she moved in front of the mirror and attempted to make it look at least a little bit like she hadn't been crying. She turned back to Ron.

"I really hope he comes back, though."

The moment she moved in front of the mirror and was paying more attention to herself, he took the opportunity to let out a sigh of relief. He really felt like he'd gotten lucky there, managing to say the right thing to keep her calm. In fact, he felt more than a little proud of himself and found himself trying to suppress that cocky smirk from surfacing. This was a very serious moment, Ron, not a time to be celebrating...

"He'll be back, all right?" He said, offering another smile as he stepped the rest of the way through the door. "...and if he doesn't...we'll worry about that if it happens, yeah?"

She nodded. "I'm just not sure what I should do. He's been with me every day since I got here. I don't feel like I can just...go about my day like things are normal."

He was silent for a long while, leaning back against the wall and crossing his arms over his chest. Maybe...maybe a change of subject would help her out? He wrinkled his nose some before blurting out the first thing that came to mind.

"How do you feel about Quidditch?"

She smiled, because he really was trying. You're good people, Ron Weasley.

"I don't play, but I'm a big fan. James plays, I'm sure you know."

"You should play, you'd probably be brilliant at it! I mean, you're good at everything else."

Really trying and only considering glossing over the fact that everything he said managed to come back to James.

"I heard he played too, he's a chaser, right?"

"I have a lot of other interests. And I like to watch," she said with a shrug. "But I do very much enjoy broom flight."

"Yes, Chaser. And Captain."

All right, he could go with this, casual chatter to help the mind wander. He didn't much bother to ask permission at this point, venturing farther into the room and flopping down to sit on the edge of the bed.

"What else do you like then?"

Lily sat on the stool she kept at her vanity and shrugged. "Lots of things. Recently I've been making a lot of potions. And I started an herb garden as well. I like to cook. And I like to do new things. Try food I haven't tried before or go places I've never been. And people. I like to talk to people."

"Oh yeah, I know you like to talk. Sometimes it's like you're never going to stop..." He meant it in a good way of course, pausing for just a second to clarify. "...er, not in a bad way, I mean."

He flopped down onto his back, staring up at the ceiling.

"It's not like...well, you know when some people talk and all you hear is some kind of droning on or something like that...it's not like that. You're actually interesting when you talk."

She nods, understanding what he means. "Well some people talk just to listen to themselves to talk. When I talk it's because I've got something to say or I want to get to know someone or I'm trying to lighten a mood or...whatever. Words can be even more powerful than magic, you know."

"You really think so? I mean, words are just words, right?"

He said it without really thinking about it, still staring up at the ceiling and not moving in the least bit. If only he'd taken to that sort of thinking before, he would have saved himself a lot of stress and anger.

"Not at all. Earlier, when I opened the door, you had to search for just the right words, because what words you picked mattered. And you picked well. And just think of all the words you had to choose from?" She grins. Ron is doing a very good job of distracting her.

"And just think of how much more powerful words make our magic! How you say an incantation matters, too."

"Yeah, I guess I did do pretty good, didn't I?" He murmured in response, unable to keep that almost cheeky sort of smile from finally settling on his face.

"Don't I know it! I had to hear it from Hermione when we first started out, should've heard her telling me how to say 'leviosa'..."

She laughed softly. "Yes. You did."

"But anyway. Words are very powerful. Particularly when someone's upset. Or the other way around, words can hurt people too."

He did know that all too well, pausing for a moment as that smile faded some so he could nod. Perhaps it was even a little more somber than he realised.

"Yeah, I guess we don't always think about it that way, do we?"

She nodded. "We often speak without thinking. But I think at least being aware of how powerful words are is good."
